Commemorating A Civil Rights Hero

Every year various committees, commissions, agencies, and organizations gear-up for a slew of ceremonies to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He stood for justice and equality, and the promotion of peace. Dr. King envisioned a country where no-one-ethnic group would be denied their unalienable civil rights─that future generations would be allowed to attain the level of greatness of which they earn by their achievements.

One of the ways in which we can carry-on his vision is by encouraging those younger than us to elevate themselves. Teach them that they are capable and deserving of attaining great success. The Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County instills such values in our young people today through their youth programs. They host an annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Dinner in which they present the children that participate in their programs. Funds raised from the event sponsor scholarships for high school seniors planning on attending traditionally African-American universities. They also honor certain staff members for their devotion and commitments to the community and neighborhood.

Amid the gloomy forecast for the future of America, hope remains a bright light, still glimmering in our children. Let's strive to inspire and motivate them to do the best they can. Perhaps in our efforts we can keep the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. alive and preserve his legacy through the coming generations.

  1. I liked this write-up. I found an article about the "Greenboro Four": four young men whose sit-in at a F.W. Woolworth store in 1960 sparked years of civil rights protest. You'd be interested to know that one of those gentlemen now lives in Hempstead.
