By Deidre Johnson

The Village of Hempstead Community Development Agency hosted for residents, the first in a series, a Homeowners Education Workshop on earlier this month at the Hempstead Public Library. The guest panel consisted of mortgage professionals from TD Bank, Long Island Housing Partnership and The Goodman Law Firm.

Tonjola Cole, Community Development Loan Officer, informed the residents of refinance options that are afforded to homeowners at TD Bank. She presented refinance options, costs that may occur during the transaction and federal mortgage programs such as the Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP) which assists homeowners in refinancing their mortgages – even if they owe more than the home’s current value.

Long Island Housing Partnership, certified by HUD, shared the various services offered at LIHP such as mortgage and First Time Home Buying counseling, foreclosure prevention and loan modification options. Carol Yopp, Program Manager of LIHP reiterated the importance of informing the residents of the numerous FREE counseling services offered to the residents by LIHP. Some of the programs offered teach first time home buyers the purchasing process to utilizing federal programs such as Making Home Affordable (MHA) the Obama Administration initiative that helps struggling homeowners get mortgage relief through a variety of programs.

Real Estate Attorney, Peter Goodman addressed the audience with pertinent information regarding the attorney’s role in the refinance transaction and a synopsis of the homeowners legal options in refinance, short-sales and bankruptcy.

The date for the next scheduled workshop will be forthcoming.
